Austin, a capital of live music

Austin is the capital of the state of Texas. It’s a university city and has rapidly developed into a center for alternative culture. Austin is known as “The Live Music Capital of the World” due to the huge number of venues which promote live music.

Austin is an unusual city, and is regarded as the bohemian heart of Texas. Now, Austin is one of most rapidly developing cities in the United States.  Not only has its population grown, but it also boasts avant-garde architecture, a commercial district, and a variety of clubs and pubs. Austin has become the most fun city in Texas.

A stroll around the University of Texas in Austin is a must. It’s a lovely walk, which takes in the Blanton Museum of Art, the Harry Ransom Center, and the Texas Memorial Museum of Science and History. Public art is also on display at the campus. The celebrated University Tower has been reopened, which is certainly worth a visit. Enjoy the spectacular views and learn about its history.

The Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum always hosts interesting exhibitions.

The Texas State Capitol is a gorgeous building wrapped in Texas pink granite. Texans are proud of the fact that it is 14 feet higher than the United States Capitol in Washington, DC.  Moreover, it is open for public viewing 7 days a week, which is not the case with other state capitols. You can stroll along the corridors, admire the paintings and sculptures and check out the legislative chambers.

Our tour of the Downtown commences at the Capitol. In this part of the city, modern skyscrapers are juxtaposed with 19th century buildings such as the Old Bakery, the Millett Opera House, Driskill Hotel, St. Mary’s Cathedral and St. David’s Church which are examples of Old World architecture.

Walk through the Historical Center of Bremond Block to have a look at a row of houses which are reminiscent of the Victorian era and high society.

Austin’s Congress Bridge is a fascinating place to visit as it plays home to approximately 1.5 million bats. It is the largest urban bat colony in the world and one of the largest colonies of Mexican free-tailed bats in North America.  This makes for spectacular viewing at nightfall.

Austin is also famous for live music that is available throughout the city. Musicians play in shops, parks, alleys and at gatherings. They usually play in pubs, clubs, cafes, taco restaurants and music halls. There are, in fact, 200 live music venues to choose from.
